 | A Thread of Hope19. December 2011
An exhibition with embroidered costumes, dresses, shawls, bags
and other varieties of textile handicraft from Syria.
Under the title 'A Thread of Hope', the Women's Museum presents
works from the women's workshop ANAT where Syrian and Palestinian
women's embroideries following the old Arabic patterns and
traditions but are still part of modern textile design.
ANAT is named for a goddess of love and war in Semitic mythology.
The women's workshop ANAT focuses on historical costumes and
handicraft techniques as an inspiration for developing new
techniques, patterns and designs.
ANAT enables the women's financial independence.
Approximately 600 women from the rural areas of Syria and refugee
women from the Palestinian quarters in Damascus are employed in
delivering the colourful embroideries to the workshop in Damascus
where 20 women use the embroideries in the beautiful and exotic
designs.
The exhibition in Denmark gives examples of the present-day
embroideries of the workshop and shows how the Arabic embroidering
techniques have been used in traditional clothes.
