Field of responsibility

The Women’s Museum’s field of responsibility is women’s lives and work in recent Danish culture-history.

Over the last centuries the traditional province of women has changed radically and constantly. Everything has changed; the manufacture of food and clothing, the rhythm of body, day and seasons, the handing down of practice, morals and traditions.

Since 1982 the Women’s Museum has collected objects, photos and knowledge to document and record this development and the changes it has implied. Apart from perpetuating our species, women have left few material traces. The labour of women most often has produced perishable goods.

Building museum collections focused on women’s lives implies searching for what has been lost, been worn out or eaten up. Likewise the spoken rather than the written word has passed on knowledge and traditions between women. Inquiring about women’s lives often also implies questioning what has been silenced.
