Study and research

More focus on trafficking
Minister for Gender Equality, Eva Kjer Hansen (Liberal) has earmarked 1.3 million kr. for an ambitious project to support victims of trafficking and present information on trafficking and prostitution to the general public.

Behind this project is the Women’s Museum in Denmark and project co-ordinator Hanne Mainz. Among the initiatives is field work in the massage parlours to inform foreign prostitutes of their rights and of the support offered in Denmark.

At the same time this project is meant to determine the number of trafficked women in Århus. The knowledge obtained through this project will be presented in newspaper articles, plays and events at the Women’s Museum. The project will also make recommendations for further action in this field.

‘It is a good thing that this project focuses on the presentation of the knowledge they gather, in order to expose the serious problem of trafficking’ said the Minister for Gender Equality, Eva Kjer Hansen, when she visited the Women’s Museum to announce the support for the project.

Girls’ Community Schools and Women’s Aid
A nationwide survey was done of the institutions and placement opportunities for girls, young women and young mothers, which were founded around the year 1900. These institutions and placements served to educate and improve the girls. According to the contemporary norm for girls’ behaviour, they were to be educated to take on the woman’s role, which included housekeeping. The National Council of Danish Museums supported this project financially in 2001. Parts of the research have been published in our Yearbook 2002.

The project continues in 2004 with a special emphasis on the Women’s Aid facility and with an aim to produce an exhibition on the subject to coincide with the Women’s Aid 100th anniversary in 2006.
