Research

The Museum continuously carries out large research and study projects, many of which are later presented in special thematic exhibitions. Presentation through special exhibitions makes it possible to focus on themes within the Museum’s area of responsibility (women’s lives and work in recent Danish cultural history) which are already current or to give them a particular timeliness. Furthermore, the Museum makes an effort to present the results of this research to a wide audience through articles and books.

Several of these themes are areas of constant research and study in the Museum’s work plans and are seen as the focus in gathering, research and presentation. This is i.e. true of birth and institution culture, the changes in motherhood and the relationship between motherhood and work.

The connection between way of life and material culture is characteristic for the Museum’s research, as is the fact that the research is carried by a contemporary gathering of primary source material, such as memoirs, interviews and archive studies.

In co-operation with the Institute of History and Area Studies, the University of Aarhus and the Women’s History Archives at the State and University Library in Aarhus the Women’s Museum runs the Center for Gender Studies.

The Museum has conducted research and gathered primary source material in the following areas:

  • Single mothers and motherhood
  • Servant girls’ lives
  • Education – including both girls’ schools (teachers and pupils) and public high schools
  • Girls’ institutions
  • Wedding and wedding customs
  • Birth culture – including institution culture
  • Illegitimate children and their mothers
  • Health care and visiting nurses
  • Housekeeping and domestic utensils – including the industrialization process of the households with electrical appliances and plastic products (Tupperware) and the impact of this on the classical housewife’s role
  • Self-employed businesswomen
  • Women and sports
