![]() | When Danish households were electrified The history of modern housekeeping is the history of the electrical wonders that found their way to Danish homes during the last half of the 20th century. In the course of a few decades, refrigerators, freezers, washing machines and vacuum cleaners became natural aids in housekeeping and distinctly changed the housewife’s work. The change from traditional to modern housekeeping was geographically and socially an uneven process. ‘When Danish Households Were Electrified’ tells who chose what, when and why. There are stories told by town women and farmers’ wives but with the common characteristic that they were all housewives in the period when the electrical household appliances entered the homes. Their stories are a piece of Danish history, telling us about the implementation of technology in the homes. It was an implementation which turned out to depend not only on the presence of technical installations such as water and electricity, but also very much on cultural values such as traditions, network and social status. The book has a summary in English.335 pages. Authors: Bodil Olesen and Jytte Thorndahl. Price: 245.00 kr. | |
