| Elisabeth Jerichau Baumann - a Woman of the World
19. May - 14. August 2011
Elisabeth Jerichau Baumann (1819-81) was one of the few women
who could earn a living from her art in the Copenhagen Golden
Age.
Her life was unique. Born and raised in Poland, trained in Germany,
married to a Dane, mother of many children, well-travelled,
productive and committed. She painted national paintings in Denmark
and folklore paintings in Rome, Cairo, Istanbul and many other
places.
Baumann's history is highly interesting today. She is a historical
role model breaking down barriers and creating connections between
the challenges of her time. The exhibition will present her life
through paintings borrowed from other museums and from private
collections. You can visit an art exhibition and at the same time
step into cultural history and through Baumann's life story and
works find food for thought about present day views on immigration,
motherhood, female artists and international networks.
